Bringing Family History to Life

James Polk Corn

James’ teenage years were marked by uncertainty. The Civil War began when he was only fifteen. Once he came of age, James left home to fight. He served as a Private in Company G of the 58th Indiana Volunteer Infantry from January 1864 to July 1865. He fought in the Battle of Peachtree Creek, where our relative, Louis Byram Shively, was killed, and he also took part in General Sherman’s Atlanta campaign.

John M. Shively

John M. Shively was a true pioneer with an adventurous spirit. Born in Kentucky in 1804, he started as a schoolteacher but soon set off in search of new frontiers. Shively wasn’t just a settler—he was a visionary. Frustrated with long international mail routes, he proposed a shortcut through Panama. He also found himself at the heart of a major political dispute between the U.S. and Great Britain over Oregon’s ownership. In Washington, D.C., he met with President James K. Polk and British officials, suggesting a compromise that helped prevent war.

He served from March 1945 until April 1946, contributing to the war effort while developing a strong sense of duty, discipline, and patriotism. His time in the Navy instilled in him a lifelong commitment to service and country, values that guided him in all aspects of his life. I so appreciate you finding the info about Flo's house. It was such a part of my memories of growing up. The house was torn down years ago and I hadn't been able to find any pictures among my parents' things. It means so much that you were able to find the picture so quickly.
